It’s showtime for LASIK surgery! After a long wait, it’s finally time to address the constant need for glasses. This was particularly troublesome for competitive powerlifting and training, where glasses and even sunglasses presented a real annoyance. Contact lenses were never an option due to sensitive eyes, so LASIK became the obvious solution.
The procedure itself was incredibly easy. Dryness, night glare, and day glare are common side effects, but the surgeon assured me the procedure would be straightforward.
LASIK surgery preparation
Waiting for laser eye surgery can feel like an eternity, especially when you’re already deep into a training regimen. It’s fascinating to see the actual procedure, with the cornea being lifted to expose the eye for the laser treatment.
LASIK eye surgery procedure
The surgeon first uses a laser to create a flap in the cornea, then lifts it to reshape the underlying tissue with another laser. It’s a precise and surprisingly quick process. After the reshaping is complete, the corneal flap is repositioned and allowed to heal.
The entire experience was pain-free, thanks to the anesthetic. There was no discomfort during the procedure whatsoever. If someone with sensitive eyes like me can handle it, anyone can.
Post-op eye with protective tape
Post-op recovery has focused on light pump work in the 15 to 20 rep range. Avoiding failure and focusing on maintaining a pump and burning calories has been the primary goal. This period has also served as a deload week, with most sets kept below an RPE of 7 or 8.
This LASIK experience has been overwhelmingly positive. The freedom from glasses is remarkable, and the procedure itself was much easier than anticipated. It’s a significant improvement in quality of life, both in and out of the gym.
