We recently went grocery shopping and wanted to share what we picked up. Since filming in the store felt a bit awkward, we decided to show you everything back at home. Last week we stocked up on chicken while it was on sale, so this week we focused on other essentials.
We grabbed some lean ground beef for chili. We also picked up chili seasoning, chili beans, kidney beans, and crushed tomatoes to complete the recipe. We prefer making our chili from scratch to control the ingredients and seasoning.
We also snagged a block of ham. Buying ham in bulk like this is much more cost-effective than pre-sliced sandwich meat. A pre-cooked rotisserie chicken will be the base for a flavorful chicken stew. We’ll use the bones to make a rich broth and add baby carrots, baby potatoes, and baby onions. A touch of summer savory will enhance the stew’s aroma and taste.
We typically buy whatever fruit is on sale each week, which adds variety to our diet. This time, we got a large container of peaches, which were a great deal. We’re hoping they’re ripe and juicy!

We also couldn’t resist some fresh-picked strawberries. They’re locally grown and taste so much better than the ones shipped from farther away. And of course, we grabbed our usual bunch of bananas – we each try to eat one a day. They might look a bit bruised because we walk to the grocery store and carry everything back in our backpacks. It’s a good way to sneak in some extra exercise.

We aim for two servings of fruit and two servings of vegetables daily. We got a mix of colors: red strawberries, orange peaches, orange carrots, and leafy greens to ensure a good variety of nutrients. Vitamin A deficiency is a common concern, so we focus on incorporating red and orange produce into our meals.
We picked up a carton of whole eggs for a healthy source of fat-soluble vitamins. The yolks are particularly rich in nutrients like vitamin A. We also stocked up on egg whites, especially since they were on sale. Groceries in Canada can be quite expensive, so we try to be budget-conscious.

Cream of Wheat is a nice change from our usual morning oats. We’re trying to focus on buying whole, unprocessed foods to make it easier to stick to our macro goals after a recent competition. Keeping healthier options in the house helps minimize temptation.
We found a macro-friendly white bread that’s fortified with added nutrients. Two slices have a reasonable calorie count, which makes it a good choice for us. We stocked up on a few loaves to freeze for later.

We also grabbed some Splenda and a large container of Greek yogurt, which lasts a while in the fridge. Sugar-free jam complements the yogurt perfectly. That’s everything we bought on our recent clean grocery haul!
