Embracing Struggle: Why Facing Repeated Failure Builds True Strength

In bodybuilding, high-level sports, and life in general, there’s a simple truth most people avoid: you must face failure repeatedly if you want to achieve anything extraordinary. Not just once or twice—over and over, until it feels like the challenge itself is haunting you. The hardest goals will push you to the point where it seems easier to quit than to keep going.

But here’s where champions are made. Every time you hit that wall, you have two choices—stop and accept defeat, or keep fighting until the thing that once broke you becomes the thing you conquer.

The Power of Relentless Repetition

When you fail at something enough times, it can become part of your identity. At first, that feels like a burden. But once you finally achieve what seemed impossible, you gain something far more valuable than the achievement itself: proof that you can overcome anything if you refuse to give up.

Many people reach a milestone and decide they’re satisfied. They stop pushing, thinking the work is done. That’s where mediocrity creeps in. My mindset is different—I want to test myself repeatedly, even after I’ve succeeded, so I never lose the mental edge that got me there in the first place.

Fueling the Mind for Battle

In the gym, it’s easy to measure progress with numbers: more weight lifted, more reps completed, more muscle added. But mental progress is harder to see—and just as important.

Early in my career, I was hitting my physical goals but falling short on the mental side. I didn’t take enough time to reflect on where I’d come from, the challenges I’d overcome, and the mindset I’d built along the way. I was feeding my body with training and nutrition but neglecting to feed my mind with gratitude, perspective, and self-awareness.

It wasn’t until illness forced me to slow down that I truly looked back and realized how far I’d come. That experience changed my entire outlook. It reminded me that building mental strength is as critical as physical training.

The “Dungeon” We All Have

Everyone has a personal struggle—a dark place we rarely show to the world. On social media, people post highlights: PR lifts, perfect physiques, smiling moments. But behind every polished photo is a private battle.

I call this battle my “dungeon.” It’s where my insecurities, fears, and doubts live. Most people avoid acknowledging their dungeon, but I believe talking about it makes you stronger. When you face those dark corners of your mind head-on, you take away their power over you.

In fitness, the dungeon might be the moment you doubt you can finish your set, the voice telling you to skip the gym, or the fear of failing publicly. In life, it could be personal setbacks, financial struggles, or emotional scars. Whatever it is, ignoring it doesn’t make it disappear—facing it does.

Meeting the Mental Standard

When people talk about “standards” in training, they usually mean physical benchmarks: hitting a certain weight class, running a specific time, or lifting a set number of pounds. But there’s a second standard—one far less visible—that determines long-term success: the mental standard.

Meeting the mental standard means understanding your own journey and being proud of how far you’ve come, even if you’re not yet where you want to be. It means developing the resilience to keep showing up after repeated failures, to train when you’re tired, and to stick to your nutrition plan even when no one’s watching.

The mental standard is what keeps you pushing when physical effort alone isn’t enough.

The Chaos Test

Life doesn’t always challenge you when you’re prepared. Sometimes chaos hits unexpectedly—injury, sickness, personal loss, or financial strain. How you respond in those moments determines whether you break or adapt.

In training, chaos can mean a plateau you can’t break, a lift you can’t nail, or a competition that doesn’t go your way. It’s tempting to let frustration win. But when you train your mind like you train your muscles, you develop the ability to stay calm, reassess, and keep moving forward no matter the conditions.

I’ve learned that chaos isn’t the enemy—it’s the test. And every test you pass builds a stronger foundation for the next challenge.

The Sickbed Lesson

The most pivotal turning point in my life came during a period of severe illness. Lying in bed, uncertain if I would recover, I found myself reflecting on everything I had been through. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel fear or anger—I felt acceptance. For the first time in my life, I realized that even if this was the end, I had fought hard enough to be at peace.

That mindset shift carried over into my fitness journey. I no longer train just for numbers or aesthetics; I train for the mental toughness and inner peace that comes from knowing I’ve given my best effort in every area of life.

Why Comfort Is Dangerous

Comfort is the silent killer of progress. When you avoid hard things, you also avoid growth. The human mind and body adapt to whatever stress they’re placed under, but without challenge, there’s nothing to adapt to.

This is why I intentionally place myself in difficult situations—whether it’s pushing for a PR after failing it multiple times, taking on an intense diet phase, or committing to a training plan that forces me out of my comfort zone. These moments don’t just build muscle; they build resilience.

Practical Steps to Build Mental and Physical Resilience

If you want to develop the kind of strength that carries you through both workouts and life’s challenges, here’s where to start:

  1. Set goals that scare you. If your goals feel safe, they’re not pushing you enough.
  2. Fail on purpose. Take on challenges where you know success won’t come easy.
  3. Reflect on progress. Regularly look back at how far you’ve come, not just how far you have to go.
  4. Talk about your “dungeon.” Acknowledge your struggles instead of hiding them.
  5. Stay disciplined in chaos. When life gets messy, stick to your plan as best as you can.
  6. Embrace repetition. The process of trying, failing, and trying again is where growth happens.

Final Word: Fail, Learn, Repeat

Failure isn’t something to avoid—it’s the foundation of real progress. The more you face it, the less power it has over you. Whether you’re chasing a bigger lift, a leaner physique, or a personal milestone, the key is to keep showing up, even after repeated setbacks.

Your journey won’t always be neat or glamorous. There will be chaos, moments of doubt, and times when you feel like quitting. But if you hold yourself to both the physical and mental standards, face your dungeon head-on, and refuse to let comfort win, you’ll build a level of strength most people never experience.

In the gym and in life, the fight is never just about the weight on the bar—it’s about the weight you can carry in your mind and heart. And that’s a standard worth meeting every single day.
